Dr. Anthony Edwardes comes to a Vermont psychiatric hospital to take over from the departing director, but psychoanalyst Dr. Constance Peterson soon realises that he is not Edwardes at all. The impostor admits the genuine Dr. Edwardes is dead and worries that he may be his killer, though his memory is a blank. Dr. Peterson nonetheless believes the man is innocent of murder, and she sets out with him to break through his amnesia using psychoanalysis.
