Convict Van Duff masterminds a mass prison breakout, and the six men who survive it shelter in an abandoned mine shaft nearby. They then begin a long, perilous trek to recover the bank money Duff stashed away, moving on foot and by car, truck and train. Along the way their paths cross with ordinary people, and every one of them meets his own fate.
