Christopher Cross, a cashier who also paints as a struggling part-time artist, is utterly infatuated with the lovely Kitty March. Kitty strings him along, but the only man she really cares about is Johnny, a small-time crook. Learning that art dealers are taking an interest in Chris's paintings, Kitty and Johnny trick him into letting her claim them as her own. Cross goes along with it out of love for Kitty, but there is a limit to what that love will let her get away with.
