Tim first crosses paths with Mary, a poor farm girl, just as news arrives that war has been declared. He enlists and ships out to the European front, where a wound leaves him unable to use his legs. Back home, Tim receives visits from Mary and the two are strongly drawn to each other, yet his disability stops him from confessing his feelings. Matters grow more tangled when Martin, a bully who served as Tim's sergeant, sets his sights on Mary.
