This embellished retelling of the 1803 campaign waged by the celebrated frigate U.S.S. Constitution, nicknamed "Old Ironsides", on the Barbary pirates then menacing American shipping centres on the passengers and crew of the Esther, a fictional merchant ship. Falling foul of the same pirates, they are drawn into the Constitution's mission.
