Slick attorney William Foster never steps outside the law, yet he makes a speciality of representing crooks and other shady types. He has a knack for keeping them out of jail, securing acquittals and getting rulings overturned, which springs criminals from prison. His girlfriend, dancer Irene Manners, wants to marry him even while she is two-timing him. While she is out driving with Jack Defoe, the other man in her life, she kills a man, and Jack takes the blame. Foster had only just given Irene a ring, however, and it turns up at the scene of the crime. Foster takes on Jack's defence, and once the ring is discovered, he believes he is protecting Irene and so pleads guilty to tampering with the jury.
