Clair's first film, and his most dada, combines stop-motion photography with extreme slow motion across a chain of madcap, linked scenes. Among them are Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray playing chess on a rooftop, a hearse drawn by a camel and pursued by its own pallbearers, and a giddy roller coaster ride to close. It is a film built on contradictions and agreements.
