Benjamin Christensen's legendary film, filled with torture, possessed nuns, grave robbing and a satanic Sabbath, strings together dramatised vignettes to test the scientific theory that medieval witches were afflicted by the same hysteria seen in psychiatric patients at the turn of the century. Yet the film is anything but solemn; it is a witches' brew of the frightening, the grotesque and the darkly funny.
